Dan Freedman reports for the Times Union that New York Senator Chuck Schumer failed in his attempt to work around the Republican capping of New York’s state and local tax deduction, losing a 52-43 vote in the U.S. Senate Oct. 23. Republicans passed a new federal tax bill in 2017, putting a $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes, which raised federal taxes for many New Yorkers. “Taking away the SALT deduction was brutally unfair to New York’s hard-working homeowners who bear the brunt of the Trump tax bill,” Schumer said after the vote. “While I am disappointed that this horrible rule will continue to take its toll on working families across the country, I remain committed to eliminating the harmful SALT deduction cap through any means possible.” Schumer cited the specific local impact of the Republican tax bill, saying that in 2016, 51,000 Albany County residents filed SALT deductions that averaged $15,500, which means their taxes were raised considerably.
