Greene County Jail plan not altered at special meeting of legislature

May 30, 2019 12:57 am
Bill Williams at 98.5-The Cat reports that Greene County is going ahead with a new jail project in Coxsackie, the most expensive building project in the county's history. Greene County legislators previously approved the $70 million jail that will surely cause the county to raise taxes. Currently Greene County is sharing jail services with Albany and Columbia counties, so sharing jail services is clearly not illegal in New York as some Greene County Legislators have claimed. Still, Greene County Administrator Shaun Groden sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo May 16 asking about whether Greene County could share a jail with a neighboring county. “We are seeking your express support for this Legislative amendment(s) in order to avoid groundbreaking and issuance of final bonds.... As Greene County is about to break ground, your express support for such amendment(s), writing, is required no later than May 28, as contracts are being signed as this letter is being drafted,” the letter read. At the county's May 29 special meeting, Groden said only a representative from the governor's office, and someone from Assemblymember Chris Tague's office, got back to Groden about his letter, and neither promised to do anything. The meeting devolved into chaos as supporters of the project chanted "Build the jail," while those in opposition chanted back, "Raise our taxes."
