NY bans floating digital billboards

Jesse McKinley is reporting for The New York Times anyone spending time in New York City over the past several months has likely noticed the emergence of digital billboards in the East and Hudson rivers. Under legislation signed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo August 19, those marketing spectacles may now be a thing of the past. “These floating billboards are a nuisance that blight our shores and distract from the great natural beauty of our waterways,” Cuomo said in a statement. “This action will help make our waters more enjoyable and safer for everyone.” The statewide ban is effective immediately. Ballyhoo Media, the company responsible for floating digital displays in the city, insists it will continue to operate the billboards in some form, questioning the language contained in the measure. Adam Shapiro, the Florida-based company’s chief executive, said this week he was disappointed by the governor’s decision but remained “undeterred.” Read the full story in The New York Times.
