James likely Democrats choice for AG

May 17, 2018 12:12 pm
Chris Bragg reports in the Albany Times Union that Letitia James, New York City's Public Advocate, is likely to get the Democratic Party's nod for attorney general. Democrats are scrambling to back a new attorney general candidate after incumbent Eric Schneiderman resigned May 7 amid accusations of violence against four women. At the Democratic convention next week on Long Island, any candidate that gets at least 50 percent of vote among delegates becomes the officially backed designee before the September Democratic primary. On May 16, James said she would not seek the endorsement of the Working Families Party, which holds its convention this weekend. James was the only person to ever win a New York City Council seat running only on the third-party ballot line, with the Working Families Party. Now, she is not seeking their support, to win some from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is currently feuding with the party over their support for Cuomo rival Cynthia Nixon. "I would say that helps her an awful lot," said Jay Jacobs, the Nassau Democratic chairman and former statewide chair of the party. "It certainly makes me be more enthusiastic for her."
