Cuomo to establish panel to investigate single payer health care

Jan 22, 2019 12:00 pm
Nick Reisman of Spectrum's State of Politics and Samar Khurshid of Gotham Gazette are reporting the $175 billion spending plan presented by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo did not include a provisioner single-payer health care, but his agenda for the coming year does include establishing a commission to review how to expand healthcare to everyone statewide. Billed in Cuomo's State of the State book as a commission on “universal access to health care,” it will include executives in the health and insurance industries and is backed by the Department of Health and the Department of Financial Services, which regulates the insurance industry in New York. The commission will be responsible for issuing a report to Cuomo by Dec. 1. “This review process will consider all options for advancing access to care, including strengthening New York’s commercial insurance market, expanding programs to include populations that are currently ineligible or cannot afford coverage, as well as innovative reimbursement models to improve efficiency and generate savings to support expanded coverage,” according to Cuomo’s policy book. Cuomo wants to codify aspects of that law, such as the health exchange, as a provision in his budget proposal. Read both stories online at the State of Politics blog and Gotham Gazette.
