Judge says Trump rape case can move forward

Jan 10, 2020 12:11 am
Erik Larson reports for Bloomberg that on Jan. 9 New York State Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan ruled against President Donald Trump's efforts to dismiss a lawsuit from a woman who says he raped her two decades ago. The judge also denied Trump’s request to delay the exchange of evidence between E. Jean Carroll, the woman alleging the rape, and his defense lawyers. Trump asserted that there was no standing for the case because he does not live in New York anymore. The dismissal failed because of a legal error, as Trump did not include a written statement backing up his assertion that the case should be dismissed on the grounds that the court lacks jurisdiction. “There is not even a tweet, much less an affidavit by defendant Trump in support of his motion,” the judge wrote. Carroll's lawyer Roberta Kaplan said, “We look forward to moving ahead and proving that Donald Trump lied when he told the world that he did not rape our client and had not even met her.” Read more about this story at the Bloomberg website.
