Cuomo to tour other states with legal recreational marijuana

Feb 21, 2020 12:21 am
Bethany Bump reports for the Times Union that Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Feb. 20 that he will visit Massachusetts, Illinois, and either California or Colorado to see "different versions" of legalized recreational marijuana programs before state legislators are expected to vote on the issue this spring. "We want a goal of social equity, we want to make sure young people can't get it, et cetera. We want to make sure there are advantages to communities that have been oppressed," Cuomo said. The neighboring state of Vermont recently approved recreational marijuana sales, and many New York license plates can be seen in the parking lots of the five Berkshire County pot shops in Massachusetts. Marijuana is now legal in 11 states and Washington, D.C., and two-thirds of Americans support legalization, according to a November 2019 Pew Research Center poll.
