Supes ask state to extend comment period on Amtrak's Hudson River fence

Mar 24, 2018 12:10 am
Amanda Purcell reports for Columbia-Greene Media that comments are due March 29 about Amtrak's plan to erect 8,200 feet of fencing along the Hudson River in Columbia and Dutchess counties, although some Columbia County officials want to change that. Five Columbia County town supervisors want to extend the comment period, since they think the public has not been properly informed about the proposed fence. The supervisors are requesting informational meetings to be held in each community where the proposed fence would go. “Only then can the public be educated properly and have a voice in the planning of a project that will have a direct impact on them,” according to a letter dated March 21 to the state Office of Planning, Development and Community Infrastructure. “As town supervisors we are concerned about this project due to its impact on the quality of life in our communities, and the ability of our first responders to perform water rescue.... It must be said that the proposal lacks sufficient detail that addresses the questions our stakeholders have.” Comments about the proposal can be emailed to cr@dos.ny.gov or mailed to New York State Department of State, Office of Planning, Development and Community Infrastructure, One Commerce Plaza, 99 Washington Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12231.
