Bill Williams is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media motorists traveling Route 385 between Athens and Coxsackie can expect delays due to a five-mile paving project scheduled to occur this month, Bryan Viggiani, public information officer for the state Department of Transportation Region 1, said. The roadwork will cover 5.2 miles, from the bridge over Murderers Creek in Athens, to Sutton Place in the village of Coxsackie, he said. Prep work is currently underway, which includes filling potholes along the roadway, and will continue until June 9. Paving is scheduled to begin June 10, and continue through June 30, weather permitting. Traffic through the work zone will be controlled by flaggers. It will consist of one lane of alternating traffic through areas where crews will be working, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists who want to avoid the paving project can use Route 9W as an alternate route. For several years Department of Transportation workers have been patching potholes and filling large cracks in the Route 385 roadway. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones, and reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Drivers are advised to obey flaggers’ directions: Move over a lane, if safely possible, or slow down significantly whenever encountering roadside vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber, or green lights, including maintenance and construction vehicles in work zones.
