New York joins with neighbors on gun-buying database

Feb 22, 2018 3:03 pm
Jimmy Vielkind reports in Politico New York that the governors of New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Jersey announced a consortium to share data on mental health, police warrants, and orders of protection Feb. 22 to prevent firearm purchases that might lead to bad outcomes. Cuomo said the plan is to, “share your databases and your information so if a person can’t buy a gun in New York they don’t drive to Connecticut or New Jersey or Rhode Island and buy the gun.” A memorandum of understanding signed by all four governors says the states, "shall, consistent with all applicable state and federal laws and to the extent practicable, share information regarding individuals identified by each respective state as disqualified from possessing a firearm." The states may need to enact specific legislation to block individuals from other states flagged in the database from buying firearms. Read the full story in Politico New York.
