Daniel Zuckerman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley hopes to assign school resource officers to all six public schools in Greene County starting in September. Seeley discussed the proposal during a recent meeting of the Greene County Legislature Public Safety Committee. Under Seeley's plan, an officer would be posted at each school five days a week during the school year. “We are moving forward with it,” he said. “Hopefully, we will have these resource officers in the school in September.” Police officers undergo a two-week training period before assignment, Seeley said. School resource officers are not simply armed guards -- they are meant to interact with students to develop trust, Greene County Undersheriff George Tortorelis said. Seeley said he intends to reach out to U.S. Rep. John Faso and state Sen. George Amedore to determine if federal or state funding is available for the program. The sheriff’s office has an estimated price tag for the school resource officer program, but Seeley declined to reveal it. “It’s not bad, but it’s not good,” Seeley said. “I’m going to work diligently to get the funding so it doesn’t cost the taxpayers.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
