Albany County Legislature votes on environmental issues Monday

Dec 09, 2019 11:21 pm
Local environmental activists are organizing for the Albany County Legislature meeting Monday, Dec. 16, when the county's Clean Air Law will be voted on. Democrats in the Albany County Legislature are trying to pass the Albany County Clean Air Law, which would restrict waste-burning operations and require emission monitoring standards at local facilities. The law holds waste incineration facilities to burning less than 25 tons a day, which should limit new facilities from opening, but applies mainly to the one facility operating currently in the county, the LaFargeHolcim cement plant in Coeymans in southern Albany County. Coeymans passed its own similar law, but that's endanger of being overturned by an incoming Republican administration with ties to the business. The Albany County Legislature will also vote on the "Skip The Straw" Law on Dec. 16. The public forum to speak on these issues starts at 6:30 p.m., with a limit of two minutes per speaker. The legislature meets at the Albany County Court House, in the Legislative Chambers, on the 2nd Floor, at 16 Lodge Street with the entrance in the back of the building on Lodge Street. The full Legislative meeting follows the public forum, at around 7:30 p.m. There is a live webstream of the meeting on the Albany County Legislature's website, with a link on the WGXC Newsroom.
