Cairo-Durham budget adoption pending; deadline looms

Apr 23, 2013 6:19 am
Brian Hubert reports in The Daily Mail the Cairo-Durham Board of Education has not yet adopted its proposed 2013-14 school budget. The plan under consideration totals $27.8 million and requires a 4.23 tax levy increase, the maximum allowed under the state tax cap formula. The proposal eliminates 9.9 positions in eight elementary areas, including English, math, art and music. A $400,000-plus boost in state aid allowed the district to stave off greater cuts in staff and programs, according to Business Manager Lissa Jilek. Districts must finalize spending plans no later than April 26, according to state law. The Cairo-Durham board, along with all other Boards of Education in Columbia and Greene counties, will meet simultaneously tonight. In addition to local business, the boards will conduct the annual Questar III BOCES administrative budget and board vote. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
