Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the Village of Catskill passed a new tree law last week. Catskill Village President Vincent Seeley explained, “The law aims to treat trees as a vital asset to the community and installs the concept of a tree council, which will help guide with the planting, removal and replacement of trees on public property. The spirit of the law is not to interfere with private property unless [a tree] is posing a threat to life and property.” The law is modeled after similar statutes in Athens and Saugerties that only regulate publicly-owned trees. Cultivate Catskill and the village’s Tree Council developed the law that passed unanimously.
