Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Chatham Town Board last month approved a resolution to borrow $225,000 to fund the work needed to finish the pavilion at Crellin Park. The board is still working on the details for the project, which would include the addition of a kitchen and bathrooms to the pavilion, which is located near the swimming area at the town park. Plans to rebuild the structure have been ongoing for several years. Newly appointed board member Michael Richardson questioned the wisdom of expending $250,000 for the six-week summer program. “What’s the demand for this?” he asked. Richardson admitted he had not seen the survey on what residents wanted in the park. Board members Kevin Weldon and John Wapner pointed out the town sees revenue from groups that rent the pavilion. “It’s a little bit of a ‘Field of Dreams,’ if you build it, they will come,” Weldon said. Town Supervisor Maria Lull said the board would borrow the money now, from the Bank of Greene County, because interest rates are low, and payments would not start until 2020.
