Amtrak plan calls for significant outages at Penn Station

May 02, 2017 7:30 am

Dana Rubinstein is reporting at Politico New York some details of Amtrak's summer track replacement plan are emerging. For 19 days, beginning July 7 and lasting through July 25, at least some portion of Penn Station could be out of service, according to a preliminary Amtrak engineering plan. A second outage, slated to last 25 days, is tentatively scheduled for August 4 through 28. The August outage is expected to result in "significant impacts to service," according to the plan. Politico reports the plan does not make clear how many, or which Penn Station tracks will be affected during these periods. The plan also lists several less-severe, 55-hour outages beginning in May and June. Work on the infrastructure supporting and securing Penn Station could last until June 2018. “It looks like they really are looking at putting some significant amount of work during the summer," Richard Barone, the Regional Plan Association’s vice president for transportation, said. "It will make for a rather rough commute." Read the full story at Politico New York.
