Chatham board approves bridge traffic light funding

Jan 13, 2020 1:30 pm
Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Chatham Town Board January 2, approved funding for a traffic light on the Albany Turnpike Bridge in East Chatham. The project is funded by federal aid, but the town must first spend the $250,000 and then be reimbursed. Tom Baird, a representative of the engineering firm Barton and Loguidice, was at the meeting to answer questions about the light and planned changes to the intersection on Route 295. Baird explained that the light will have a sensor, so vehicles traveling from the Old Chatham side of the bridge will trigger the light to turn green as they approach the bridge. There will also be a sensor on the Route 295 side. Baird said the sensor operates using some fairly sophisticated technical, and will be sensitive to back-ups on 295. The town will be responsible for maintaining the light with state help. Construction can now begin in the spring, Baird said. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
