No surprise, fewer NYers feeling the holiday spirit
Nov 18, 2020 2:00 pm
Lauren Stanforth is reporting for the Times Union a new statewide survey of consumers conducted by the Siena Research Institute, found that belief in Santa Claus dipped this year for the first time since at least 2010, from 30 percent to 26 percent. And fewer people are planning to put up a Christmas tree — 67 percent of people plan to put up a tree in their home, down from 70 percent in previous years. It also appears that New Yorkers are listening to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's directive to limit the size of Thanksgiving gatherings to no more than 10 people, with 52 percent of those surveyed saying they will not be joining friends or family for the holiday next week. Only 14 percent plan to travel to visit people. Less than 25 percent of survey participants said they plan to shop locally on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday, but almost 50 percent will be shopping online on Cyber Monday this year. Siena surveyed 803 New Yorkers by landline and cell phone between November 4 and 10. Read the full story in the Times Union.
