Dave McQuilling reports for News10 in Albany that Ravena's cement plant run by Holcim Inc settled with the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of New York to pay a $850,000 civil penalty for local pollution. The Holcim plant violated its State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit’s 273 times between 2015 and 2021, including with fecal coliform, suspended solids, settleable solids, and other issues. There was also an unreported sulfuric acid spill, and discharges into Coeyman’s Creek and Hannacroix Creek, which run into the Hudson River. $212,000 of the settlement payment will go to a NYS Environmental Benefit Project for improving stormwater management at Coeymans Landing Park in the Town of Coeymans. The State Attorney’s office says Holcim will “undertake additional measures to ensure that the Facility is fully compliant with the terms of its Permit by October of 2022.” The international company released a statement about its polluting plant in southern Albany County that said, in part, "This consent decree is a humbling reminder that we did not achieve our own expectations, for which we take full responsibility. We have worked closely with the State and Federal Government to take steps to ensure we are in continuous compliance, today and into the future." Read more about this story at the News10 website.
