HPD now testing body cameras on patrol
Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Hudson Police Department is currently testing body cameras while on patrol. The test period began February 26 and will continue for 60 days. During that time, one officer per shift will be sporting the device. “The goal is to have every member of the department use it and grade it,” Police Chief L. Edward Moore said. “We will take their suggestions and evaluate it.” Policies have yet to be developed around use of the cameras, including the circumstances of how and when they are worn, the disclosure of evidence and how long the footage is saved. Any video captured during the pilot program can be used in prosecutions, Moore said. The department is testing cameras made by Axon, an Arizona-based company that manufactures weapons and technology for law enforcement. The department received $10,000 for the project from the U.S. Justice Department in September 2017. And in January, Hudson River Bank & Trust Foundation provided an additional $10,000 toward the project. “This started with us receiving feedback two years ago from the public that was interested in us having them, so we followed through and we’re learning how to use them,” Moore said. Moore hopes to eventually acquire cameras for each of the 26 officers on the city force. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
