New York school districts will be overcharged at least $100 million in 2012 by the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, according to a Gannett News Service investigation by David McKay Wilson. Gannett reports BOCES (BOE-sees) overcharged school districts $473 million from 2007 to 2011. These costs come from the state’s 37 BOCES services that support school districts’ management or central office functions. State Education Commissioner John King said the overcharges should be viewed as an “accounting practice” necessary to run the system. Critics call BOCES’ actions evidence that taxpayers are getting taken, year after year after year.
