Neighbors opposed to Philmont Habitat for Humanity project

Jul 20, 2020 5:45 am
Nora Mishanec is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media some Philmont residents are raising concerns about a proposed Habitat for Humanity project planned for 18 Eagle Street in the village. The majority of residents and property owners who live in the area surrounding the proposed site oppose the project, according to a July 11 letter signed by 11 residents and sent to Philmont Mayor Clarence Speed, as well as the members of the village board. The group wrote in the letter, “We feel unheard through this whole process.” Speed said he does not understand the pushback against the proposal. “Whatever the planning board decides is all right with me,” the mayor said July 17. The Philmont Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the Habitat for Humanity proposal at 7 p.m., Tue., July 21. Up to 16 residents will be permitted to attend in person by pre-registering with the village clerk. All other attendees are invited to participate virtually or by phone, according to the Philmont Clerk and Treasurer Facebook page. The aggrieved Eagle Street residents are critical of the plan to move forward with the hearing at limited capacity. “Important decisions should not be made in unprecedented times when residents are unable to be involved or present,” according to the letter.
