CNN reports that New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kristin Gillibrand voted May 11 for the Women's Health Protection Act, a bill aimed at allowing abortion nationwide. The theatrical vote's outcome was known before it was taken, but Schumer, as majority leader, wanted to get all senators on the record after the leak of the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe vs. Wade. All Republicans voted against the measure, but Schumer could not get his entire delegation on board, as West Virginia-based Democrat Joe Manchin voted against too, for a 51-49 total defeating the bill. "Once again -- as fundamental rights are at risk at the Supreme Court -- Senate Republicans have blocked passage of the Women's Health Protection Act, a bill that affirmatively protects access to reproductive health care," President Joe Biden said in a statement. "This failure to act comes at a time when women's constitutional rights are under unprecedented attack -- and it runs counter to the will of the majority of American people."
