Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a new comprehensive plan for Catskill Park is calling for a transportation study of high-use corridors such as Route 23A, as well as public transportation options and potential parking fees at high-use sites. The Greater Catskill Region Comprehensive Recreation Plan was completed by the Catskill Watershed Corporation, Catskill Center, state Department of Environmental Conservation and New York City Department of Environmental Protection. As use of Catskill Park continues to increase each year, environmental agencies are looking to increase recreational access. The Catskill Center Stewardship program, including public outreach and education at Kaaterskill Falls, Platte Clove and Peekamoose, experienced a 27 percent increase in visitors during the summer season. Some trail goals specific to Greene County include creating a new Huckleberry Loop Trail from Huckleberry Point to the Platte Clove Road trailhead, connecting the public fishing parking area in Hunter to the Becker Hollow parking lot and trailhead, and extending Devil’s Path to Route 42 and connecting Tannersville to the Kaaaterskill High Peak Trail. The plan also recommends piloting a kayak kiosk rental system at Lake Rip Van Winkle in Tannersville and branded bicycling routes in the Catskills.
