Hudson officials looking to hire fair housing officer

Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media some members of the Hudson Common Council are working to bring a fair housing officer to the city, saying the city needs its own. The county officer currently covers the city. The city code requires the city to have a fair housing officer within the Hudson Community Development and Planning Agency, but the position remains vacant. “I don’t think anybody has been serving that role for a number of years,” Mayor Kamal Johnson said. City attorney Jeff Baker confirmed the city has effectively not had its own housing officer despite it being written into the code. Columbia County Fair Housing Department Director William Fisher works as a housing officer for Hudson residents along with the rest of the county, and denied that it is too much for him to handle. “Hudson has its own specific needs and it’s not really a shared job that has kinda worked out for Hudson,” Johnson said. "...I applaud the work that’s being done by Alderman Wolff and Garriga.” First Ward Alderperson and Council Minority Leader Rebecca Wolff and 2nd Ward Alderperson and Council Majority Leader Tiffany Garriga have been advocating for the city to hire its own officer. Many Hudson residents in need of housing resources do not know Fisher or how to reach out to him, Garriga and Wolff both said. “Hudson needs its own; Hudson is unique,” Garriga said. The idea is for the position to be part-time and paid, not a commissioner. Commissioners get paid with a yearly stipend. “We’re not able to discuss it right now, but very soon hopefully,” Wolff said of how the position would be funded.
