State troopers serve search warrants

Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the state police executed search warrants Tue., Jan. 8, at the home of former Chatham Village Treasurer Barbara Henry, as well as at Tracy Memorial Village Hall as part of an investigation into village finances. The investigation is headed by the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office and the state Comptroller’s Office. Chatham Village Mayor Thomas Curran said the investigation was related to the overdue payments to the Internal Revenue Service by the village. “As far as I know, they are doing all the proper steps for an official inquiry,” Curran said. State police referred all questions to the District Attorney’s Office, but DA Paul Czajka [CHIA-kah] declined to comment, as did a spokesman for the state Comptroller's Office. The village of Chatham must pay the IRS more than $18,000 in penalties after owing the federal government more than $52,000 in overdue taxes. Curran said he and other village officials do not know why the payments were not made. Henry resigned as village treasurer in August.
