AG office investigating propane providers

Jan 10, 2018 3:01 pm
Joseph Spector reports in the Democrat and Chronicle that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is looking into price gouging from propane companies this winter. Schneiderman's office has heard dozens of complaints about propane deliveries, and price gouging, during the recent cold snap locally. On Jan. 9 his office announced a statewide investigation. “No New Yorker should have to sit in a freezing home or office this winter," Schneiderman said in a statement. "But in recent days, my office has been flooded with calls from New Yorkers across the state who’ve experienced extreme delivery delays and possible price gouging by their local propane supplier.” About 274,000 New York homes use propane for heating, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Schneiderman's office says it has heard reports of extra fees, unreturned phone calls, and other bad business practices. “I will not allow any business to exploit a weather emergency and leave New Yorkers in the cold," Schneiderman continued. There is a hotline for complaints at 518-776-2000 and online at https://ag.ny.gov/price-gouging-complaint-form. Read the full story in the Democrat and Chronicle.
