New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers were dispatched last week following two incidents in Greene County, according to a press release. In the town of Hunter on the morning of December 29, Greene County 911 received a call from a hiker with an ankle injury on the Escarpment Trail near Layman's Monument. The hiker was wearing sneakers and had slipped on the icy trail. Forest rangers and members of the local fire department responded and once on scene, they determined the 25-year-old hiker from Lebanon, New Jersey, had an unstable ankle injury. They implemented a rescue plan that included re-warming the hiker and packaging him in a litter to be carried out half a mile to the Laurel House trailhead. The hiker was transferred to Hunter Ambulance and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. On January 1, in the town of Windham, county 911 received a call reporting a woman had been injured on the Batavia Kill Trail. She had been running on the Acra Point Loop Trails along with another runner. The woman fell on the ice near the Batavia Kill lean-to. She called 911 for help and then slowly continued out to the trailhead with a group of hikers who stopped to help. Rangers responded and found the 29-year-old woman from Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, on the trail. She was provided with warming materials, rangers stabilized her arm, and helped her to the trailhead. Windham Ambulance EMS checked her and she agreed to seek additional medical treatment on her own.
