Republican Harry Wilson not running for governor

Jan 01, 2018 1:45 pm

The Times Union is reporting Republican Harry Wilson will not run for governor this year, according to the New York Daily News. Wilson came very close to winning statewide office in the 2010 state Comptroller's race, and was expected to spend as much as $10 million of his own money in the governor's race. Wilson's decision may push former Erie County executive Joel Giambra to announce his plan to run against two-term incumbent, Democrat Andrew M. Cuomo. Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb was the first Republican to officially announce last month his intention to run. State Sen. John DeFrancisco of Syracuse and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro are still considering runs. Wilson was thought by many GOP leaders to be the party's best chance of capturing the governor's mansion for the first time since George Pataki won a third term in 2002. The Daily News reported Wilson's decision not to run was because he did not want to be away from his family. Read the full story in the Times Union.
