Columbia Co. police panel to start work next month

Sep 24, 2020 2:45 pm
Natasha Vaughn is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media in compliance with the executive order issued by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in June, the Columbia County Board of Supervisors is now putting together a police reform panel. Officials are also expected to hire a paid go-between to manage the process. The committee's work will be focused on four areas: the function of police agencies; how to employ smart and effective policing standards and strategies; fostering community-oriented leadership, culture and accountability; and recruiting and supporting personnel. Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell said once the selections have been made, the panel could consist of nearly 30 people. The panel will be chaired by Hudson resident William Hughes and Ghent Town Supervisor Michael Benvenuto. Murell said he anticipates the panel will begin its work in October. The individual hired to facilitate the process will be paid $250 an hour, according to the resolution establishing the position. Murell said he expects the facilitator will be required for less than 20 hours. The board has someone in mind for the position and that person has expressed interest in the post, according to Murell. County officials are also working on a website for panel members as well as the public to allow for input during the process. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
