William Kemble is reporting in the Daily Freeman Catskill officials are considering their options after a state appeals court overturned a lower court decision and granted the group Maetreum of Cybele a religious exemption for a three-acre property on state Route 23A. The ruling means the property should be considered tax-exempt. The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court said the group “met its burden to demonstrate that it uses the property primarily for its religious and charitable” purposes. Town, county, school and special district property taxes sought from the group totaled approximately $18,000, plus interest. Catskill Supervisor Joseph Leggio said the appellate court ruling surprised town officials and that they will review it with legal counsel before determining whether to take further action.
