David Lombardo is reporting for Capitol Confidential Assemblymember Carrier Woerner, a Democrat from Round Lake, Feb. 1, joined 44 of her colleagues, including Democrat Didi Barrett and Republican Chris Tague, to warn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that the General Electric cleanup of the Hudson River is not done. The letter to EPA Region 2 administrator Peter Lopez urged the federal government to refrain from issuing a certificate of completion to the company for its cleanup effort. The state lawmakers also requested the EPA acknowledge that the cleanup is “not protective” of the environment and human health. “For decades our communities along the Hudson River have been denied access to the benefits of a clean river,” Woerner said in a statement. “The United States Environmental Protection Agency must acknowledge in their Five Year Review that there remain detrimental levels of contamination in the river, and not issue a certificate of completion to GE at this time.” U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand Feb. 5, also urged the EPA not to declare that the seven-year, $1.7 billion cleanup satisfies the 2002 agreement between the federal government and GE.
