Common Council passes one person, one vote

Oct 21, 2015 5:46 am
John Mason is reporting in the Register-Star the Hudson Common Council Tue., Oct. 20, passed a measure to put a referendum before the voters in 2016 to change the council's manner of voting from the weighted vote to voting by districts of equal population. When informed that the resolution passed, Mayor William H. Hallenbeck Jr. said, "It's a system that's been in place a long time, a system that worked. If the census figures say the aldermen in one ward are representing more of the populace, I'm not sure they shouldn't have more of a representation on the council. But I'd have to look at exactly what they passed." Hallenbeck said he has "no problem" with the idea of voters ultimately making the decision and choosing "the direction where the city of Hudson goes in the future." The resolution could still be vetoed by Hallenbeck. If that occurs, a two-thirds vote of the council would be required to override that veto. Read the full story in the Register-Star.
