Just after election, Dutchess County legislature moves to give itself raises
Mid-Hudson News reports that a few days after an election ended, and at the farthest point from facing voters again, the Dutchess County Legislature Budget, Finance, and Personnel Committee approved a substantial increase in salaries for most elected officials there. County legislators would get a 68 percent increase under the proposal. The county executive salary will go from $157,424 to $185,500, and the county clerk will see an increase from $119,330 to $150,000 in 2024. The Dutchess County comptroller and sheriff would not get pay increases until 2026 under the proposal. Legislator Michael Polasek said that the proposed pay hikes are “almost identical to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI Inflation rate for that time. For those reasons, we believe it was fair and equitable to the hardworking elected officials in their next term and I am pleased it garnered bipartisan support.” Only one Democrat voted for the measure, for "bipartisan" is a bit of an exaggeration in this case.
