MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting the president and treasurer of the Law Enforcement Employees Benevolent Association have been charged and taken into custody by federal authorities in the Southern District of New York. The association is a labor union representing law enforcement officers employed by the city of New York. The union president, Kenneth Wynder, Jr., 56, is a former state trooper and currently lives in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He was charged with defrauding union members by misappropriating money from the union’s annuity fund. The treasurer, Steven Whittick, 50, is a Department of Environmental Protection police officer and a resident of Kingston. He was charged with obstructing the fraud investigation and making false statements to federal agents. Wynder allegedly made hundreds of thousands of dollars of fraudulent transfers from the annuity fund to an operating account he controlled, and used the funds to pay for a second residence, clothing, travel expenses and the purchase of a personal car. Whittick is alleged to have repeatedly lied to federal agents in an effort to obstruct the fraud investigation by making, in two different interviews with law enforcement agents, false statements about cash withdrawals he made from union bank accounts, an annuity fund and from individual members’ accounts.
