Galvan to turn old Greenport motel into homeless shelter
The Galvan Foundation announced January 11 it has purchased the Sunset Inn and Suites, located at 3567 Route 9 in Greenport, and will renovate the 25-unit motel into an emergency housing facility for Columbia County. Galvan is partnering with the Columbia County Department of Social Services on the project. According to its press release, Galvan is making rooms available to DSS at "a significantly lower cost than other motels, and is partnering with CCDSS to ensure all guests have access to services and transportation." Once the renovation is complete in April 2018, the newly renamed Galvan Civic Motel "will be fully furnished and achieve green design standards." The facility will include a community kitchen, computer stations, space for services, laundry and common space. The total development cost is estimated to be $1.5 million. Greenport Town Supervisor Kathy Edridge failed to respond to Columbia-Greene Media's calls for comment Thursday. Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell said he is awaiting more information on the project before he comments. Galvan has scheduled a public information meeting about the project for 5 p.m., Tue., Jan. 16 at 401 State Street, Hudson. Read the full press release at 985thecat [dot] iheart [dot] com.
