WGXC Afternoon Show: Homeschool Radio Intensive Workshop Radio Artworks (Audio)

Mar 13, 2021
Organized by Jess Speer.

Led by Wave Farm 2020/2021 Radio Art Fellow, Jess Speer, this youth workshop took place February 2021, its focus was inspired by the 1992 radio artwork Redefining Democracy in America, Part 6: Leap of Faith by artist Jacki Apple, produced in collaboration with writer, poet, and performer Keith Antar Mason. Both were based in Los Angeles at the time, the radio work was made in the wake of the L.A. uprisings set off by the verdict in the Rodney King trial. Apple, a white woman raised in Manhattan, and Mason, a Black man raised in St. Louis, had a conversation about growing up on opposite sides of the American racial divide in the mid-20th century and placing the current events of that time in a larger historical and personal context. Almost 30 years later, the piece is as relevant now as it was then. Shared in today's WGXC Afternoon Show, is a talk by Jacki Apple given during the workshop via Zoom as well as radio works created by two youth members: Charlie Marsh and Faye Ross.

The show features local news, interviews with community leaders and personalities, a rundown of local and regional events, weather updates, and more about and for the community. The show is a place for a community conversation about issues, with music, and more. Saturday the emphasis is more on radio art, and art on the radio.
