Cuomo, legislative leaders don't agree on state budget

Denis Slattery reports in the New York Daily News that budget negotiations between Democratic leaders of the State Senate and Assembly and Gov. Andrew Cuomo broke down March 1. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli will release a state revenue estimate by March 5, but he has already warned that the state is facing a $2.3 billion budget deficit. “It is unfortunate that we could not come to an agreement on a revenue consensus with the Governor,” Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said in a joint statement. “It remains the intention of both the Assembly and the Senate to reach a fiscally responsible, on time budget that meets our priorities.” Cuomo's fiscal aide, Robert Mujica, pointed a finger back at the legislative leaders. "The revenue forecast is an essential starting point for the State budget, and the Senate, Assembly and Executive do not agree on a revenue estimate, with the Senate insisting on much higher revenues than the Assembly or Executive,” Mujica said in his own statement.
