DeFrancisco to join Kolb, Giambra seeking GOP nomination for governor

Jimmy Vielkind reports in Politico New York that State Senator John DeFrancisco will announce Jan. 30 that he is running to unseat Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He joins Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb and Joel Giambra, a lobbyist and former Erie County executive, who have already announced they are running for the GOP nomination for New York governor. “The economy’s in horrible shape, people are leaving the state in droves and we have a huge deficit: those are the same conditions when George Pataki beat another Cuomo,” DeFrancisco told reporters. “More importantly if you look at people along every political spectrum — progressive, conservative and those in between — there’s dissatisfaction not only with his policies but also with his manner of governing. When there’s that much dissatisfaction, to me, there’s a path … there definitely is a path to win this election.” A Sienna College poll earlier in the month said 62 percent of New Yorkers view Cuomo favorably. Republicans, though, hope the corruption trial of Cuomo’s former top aide, Joe Percoco, which began last week, will dim those numbers. Read the full story in Politico New York.
