Anthony Fiducia is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Cairo Town Board has authorized the rebidding process for the purchase and installation of new water meters. Initial bidding for the first stage of the planned $3.6 million water infrastructure project began in June; however, no legal notice announcing the bidding process was open was ever published, so the offers submitted by interested companies cannot be accepted now. “We didn’t follow the proper legal procedure,” Cairo Town Supervisor Daniel Benoit said. “We had to throw the bids out and start over.” In addition to replacing water meters, the project calls for restoration of the water tower and broken underground pipes, securing an additional source of water for the town, repair of clogged fire hydrants, and a general expansion of the water system. The project will impact residences and businesses within the Cairo municipal water district, including the Cairo-Durham school district. Bids will be open until 3 p.m. , Mon., Aug. 7 for contractors.
