DEC proposes new deer hunting rules

Jun 28, 2021 12:03 pm

Larry DiDonato reports in Porcupine Soup that the Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing new, more expansive, deer hunting regulations. The DEC's final statewide Deer Management Plan proposes establishing a nine-day season for antlerless deer beginning the second Saturday in September in certain parts of the state. The plan would also reinstate either-sex deer harvest during the early muzzleloader season in certain regions, and extend the legal hunting hours for deer and bear to begin 30 minutes before meteorological sunrise and end 30 minutes after meteorological sunset. The new regulations also mandate a solid or patterned fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink hat or vest or jacket on all deer or bear hunters with a firearm. Public comments on the new proposalscan be made through August 8, 2021 by sending an email to WildlifeRegs@dec.ny.gov with "Big Game Hunting Rules" in the subject line.
