Coxsackie seeking state grants to improve storefronts

Jan 20, 2021 2:45 pm

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Coxsackie village officials are pursuing a state grant that would support storefront improvements on Reed Street. With village board approval, the Catskill Mountain Housing Development Corporation applied for a $400,000 New York Main Street Facade Grant through the state Division of Homes and Community Renewal. Target areas for the program include areas that have sustained deterioration, decay, neglect or disinvestment, have a number of substandard buildings or vacant commercial units and in which more than 50 percent of the residents are low income. “[Catskill Mountain Housing] came to us with this grant opportunity and they felt it would be successful if applied for,” Coxsackie Mayor Mark Evans said. The application was submitted to the state on January 15. Catskill Mountain Housing Development Corporation Executive Director Larry Krajeski said if the funds are awarded, most of the money will go to building owners to use for facade repairs or interior repairs to make a business space more rentable. “We had 16 applications from 10 different business owners,” Krajeski said. “Unfortunately we won’t be able to fund them all, but we expect we will have a good bit of interest in our program.” Catskill Mountain Housing secured two Main Street Facade Grants for the village of Catskill, which amounted to $550,000, during the latest round of funding from early 2020.
