Cuomo skirts campaign laws with ads

Jul 28, 2017 12:05 am
Brian M. Rosenthal reports in The New York Times that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is in a ad about a political subject with three celebrities who say they were asked by Cuomo to appear in the ad. The director who shoots Cuomo's campaign ads shot this one too, and the website it is on says of the ad, "Client: Andrew Cuomo." But two founders of "New Yorkers United Together," the new non-profit behind the ad, claim that the governor had nothing to do with the ad. The group does not have to reveal who funded the ad. “No money was spent to promote an online public service announcement that appeared months ago and was in full compliance with all laws and guidelines,” Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for the governor, said. “No amount of false outrage changes these facts.” Susan Lerner of Common Cause New York, a watchdog group, said “It’s all too similar to other nonprofits set up by elected officials who want to hide from the public who they’re taking money from and how they’re spending it.” Read the full story in The New York Times.
