Joseph Spector reports in The Poughkeepsie Journal that crime rates in New York state and in the Hudson Valley have been dropping. Crime rates in the state fell 20 percent over the last decade. Crime in Dutchess County fell 30 percent from 2012 and 2016. "Although we are very encouraged by the overall downward trend in the crime index figures, Dutchess continues to be pro active in our commitment to aggressively hold offenders accountable and reduce violent crime," Dutchess County District Attorney William Grady said in a statement. Ulster County had a 33 percent drop in crime over the five-year period. New York's prison population fell 28 percent between 1999 and 2016 -- from 72,600 to about 52,000 with two dozen prisons closing since 2011. Read the full story in The Poughkeepsie Journal. "This all-time low in reported crime — the fewest incidents on record since statewide reporting began in 1975 – was also reached at a time when New York’s incarceration declined, so we are clearly doing something right," Green said.
