Katherine Fung is reporting for Newsweek former President Donald Trump Wed., May 5, endorsed U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik to replace U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney as the No. 3 Republican in the House. "Liz Cheney is a warmongering fool who has no business in Republican Party Leadership. We want leaders who believe in the Make America Great Again movement, and prioritize the values of America First," Trump said in a statement. "Elise Stefanik is a far superior choice, and she has my COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement for GOP Conference Chair. Elise is a tough and smart communicator!" Stefanik responded in a tweet thanking Trump, describing House Republicans as "unified and focused" on winning back the chamber next year. Trump's endorsement comes as the House Republican Conference considers removing Cheney from her leadership position. The Wyoming Republican is currently the highest-ranking Republican woman in Congress. Olivia Beavers and Melanie Zanona are reporting for Politico that Cheney is not fighting to hold onto her job as conference chair. She has not been making calls or engaging in the type of campaigning that would ordinarily be necessary to build a coalition of support ahead of a vote to determine her future in leadership. Stefanik was first elected to represent New York's North Country in 2014. A strong Trump supporter, she defended him during his 2019 impeachment and after he lost the 2020 election, she supported a lawsuit that tried to overturn that electoral defeat. Hours after the January 6, storming of the U.S. Capitol, she voted to object to Pennsylvania's electoral college votes.
