Catskill Community Center now officially closed

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Catskill Community Center is now officially closed to the public. The Main Street building was listed for sale this summer for $1.5 million. Center Executive Director Margaret Tomlinson said, “...We’re not running any programs out of the building at this point. It’s been closed to the public [since March], we were just running the food pantry out of the building.” The food pantry was moved this week to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on William Street, and now offers longer hours, from 1:30 to 6 p.m. every Wednesday. The center this year held its 7-week summer recreation program at Elliott Park. Moving the pantry was a logical choice, Catskill Community Center Board of Directors President Jeff Friedman said. “We felt that was the next logical progression, especially considering that the building is for sale,” he said. The future of the center remains uncertain. The center board is evaluating the situation, considering community needs and the services the center would be able to provide, Friedman said. He said the board hopes to complete the evaluation, with the assistance of the New York Council of Nonprofits, in the next four to six weeks. The board is looking at various locations within the community where it could provide programming, Friedman said. It would continue some programs at various locations and provide grants to other organizations for services the center cannot provide, he said. Another option is to build a new center in Elliott Park, Friedman said. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
