Foes raise Fortis' history in Belize and Canada

Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman opponents of the proposed $1.5 billion acquisition of CH Energy Group by Fortis Inc. of Canada said the state Public Service Commission should reject the deal based on Fortis’ track records in Belize and British Columbia. The groups Citizens for Local Power and the Public Utilities Law Project held a press conference Thurs., May 23, asserting Fortis cannot be trusted in the utility regulatory process. Representatives from Belize and British Columbia leveled allegations against Fortis of falsifying documents, failure to comply with court orders and making false promises. A spokesperson for Citizens for Local Power noted that Fortis itself raised the issue of whether it can be trusted to be a good corporate citizen.
