New York State Senate considers legalizing sports betting

Jan 25, 2018 2:30 pm
Yancey Roy reports in Newsday that Albany legislators may consider expanding sports betting in New York this spring. Currently, betting on horse racing is allowed at race tracks and off-track betting parlors. Depending on how the the U.S. Supreme Court rules on New Jersey’s attempt to legalize sports betting there, New York lawmakers could allow betting on professional sports league games here. “There’s a general acceptance of sports betting now — everybody’s doing it,” said Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican who chairs the Senate Racing and Wagering Committee. Citing the potential revenue to the state, he said, “It’s real money and we need it wherever we can get it.” The New York State Senate held a hearing on the subject Jan. 24, where a representative of the National Basketball Association said they no longer oppose betting legalization. One unresolved question at the hearing was whether the betting would be allowed at casinos, race tracks, or both.
