Ex-speaker Silver to be re-sentenced Monday

Jul 20, 2020 5:30 am
Kate Sheehy is reporting for the New York Post former New York State Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver, once one of the most powerful men in the state, will be re-sentenced by a Manhattan judge July 20, in a $4 million bribery scheme. Lawyers for the 76-year-old  tried to convince a federal judge last week to allow their client to appear by video feed because of the coronavirus, but federal Judge Valery Caproni said no. “...It is the Court’s preference to conduct Mr. Silver’s re-sentencing at the Courthouse,” Caproni ruled. The Manhattan Democrat was convicted in 2015, of misusing his position to solicit bribes and he was sentenced to seven years behind bars. He appealed the decision and the verdict was then tossed on a technicality. Silver was retried in 2018, and convicted of some the charges a second time. Prosecutors argue Silver should still receive a seven-year sentence; he says he should not serve any time in prison, given his age and the health risks associated with COVID-19.
