Poughkeepsie Common Council votes to support law to keep ICE out of courts

MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting the Poughkeepsie Common Council is now on record in support of the Protect Our Courts Act, recently introduced in the state legislature. Under POCA, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents would be required to obtain a warrant from a federal judge before attempting to arrest an undocumented person, either inside or on the way to a state courthouse. According to a report from the Immigrant Defense Project, ICE has increased it presence in and out of state courts 17-fold during the past year. Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson Executive Director Jonathan Bix told the council April 15, there is good reason for immigrants in particular to fear courts.
